Paris 2024. One million knitting squares and pompoms: an incredible challenge launched in Rouen

With the approach of the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris, the association “Citémômes”, based in Rouen, wants to celebrate the occasion in its own way, by producing a huge Art Installation created solely with one million knitted squares and pom-poms.

This is a collaborative art project in which anyone can participate by knitting or crocheting small squares of 5x5cm or 10x10cm, while others are invited to create colourful Pom-Poms, all with the ultimate aim of collecting “One Million” individual pieces, to be used to assemble the work of art celebrating the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, on July 26, 2024.

Ambitious projects... Success!

This is no small ambition, but it’s not “Citémômes” first attempt at such huge projects.

They launched the Tricote un sourire project in the mid-2010s, and then covered urban furniture with textile threads, known as “yarn bombing”.

In 2016, on the occasion of Normandy Impressionism, they made a giant reproduction of the painting by Claude Monet, “Woman with an Umbrella turned to the left”, which was renamed Suzanne.
